Playroom

Here is the kids playroom.  At first when I thought about finding a house I wanted an extra room that could be dedicated to storying toys and then when we started looking at homes in the DC Metro area I quickly realized that most homes here had basements...Yay, thats perfect for our needs/wants.  So with this new information my next thought was I wanted a house w/a finished basement large enough for a playroom and a craft room for myself (only because of my ETSY shop).  When we were looking at older homes I would always look to see if the basement was finished or not and when we talked to builders one of my first questions were 'how much to finish the basement'.  A finished basement was definitely a high priority for us.  So with all that being said, since we have a basement I wanted to create a fun space for the kids to play, read and create as well as house all their toys.  I knew though if I wanted them to hang out in this space it had to be a fun, inviting space for them that they would want to be in.  I am happy to say that I think we have achieved just that.  They love their playroom and do spend a lot of time in there.  Yes, toys will still be brought up to the main level but I can honestly say they spend more time playing in their playroom then any other room in the house even when I am not able to be downstairs with them.  Which brings us to another point...it has to be safe so they can be in there unsupervised and I think we did a good job at that as well.  The other good thing is my craft room is just across from their play room so I can be with them and watch them while I work too.
Here are the photos:

 The Playroom
The Black 'stripe' through the middle is painted w/chalkboard paint so
they have a big chalkboard to write on through out the entire space :-) I haven't given them the chalk yet, so it will be fun to see what they do when I let them loose w/the chalk :-)

 Toy Storage

 The very LOVED Train Table

The Art Table (when I start to trust them the cups will be filled w/art supplies) For now we are practicing w/crayolas color wonder, they stuff that will only show color on special paper :-)

A place to display all the wonderful art projects they bring home from Preschool.  I made the "ART Gallery" vinyl letters w/my Silhouette machine

This was the twins Birthday Present, and they have fun
whipping up some yummy meals for mommy :-)

 Utensil storage for the kitchen

I made these pictures with some great graphics I bought through Stampin Up.  Im really loving their "My Digital Studio" software

The Book Storage, a great idea I got from
http://iheartorganizing.blogspot.com  (using spice racks from Ikea)

 The Reading Corner

I saw this on ETSY a while ago and thought it was so cute, and with as much as Evan and Taryn love planes I wanted to add it to their playroom.  I was happy that I was able to find one w/3 kids in it...so cute :-)

We had these storage units for a while.  In GA we had them in our office/play room but when I was able to have just a dedicated play space for the kids I wanted them white so I painted them, we already had most of the basket storage from previous uses but did splurge on the drawer and cabinet inserts.  I love all the storage it provides  and we were even able to turn one of the units on its side and create a bench.  I sewed all the pillows to make some cushions for it.  I'm not the best seamstress but my work is  good enough for a child's playroom :-)

Also the green painted area behind the bench is painted w/magnetic primer so it is a big magnet board the kids can play with.

I bought these wood letters a long time ago to do something for the twins with them but I never did.  So when we were putting together their playroom I thought what better to do with them but hang the alphabets in their play space Stampin UP came out w/so super cute paper this year that just fit perfect in the space.

Movie Time

So as I have written about in many, many post....we have been working hard trying to put this house together and slowly but steadily we are getting there.  This weekend was an exciting one as we finally got to a point where we could hang the movie screen and projector and boy is it AWESOME!!!!  Chad and I watched Courageous last night.  I had bought the movie for Chad for Easter and we saved it just for this night, so that would be the first movie that we watched together in our new Theater Room.  I can say that having a theater/media room was never a top priority for me, kind of a nice to have....maybe but definitely not at the top of my list but I must say it was so amazing to watch that movie last night :-) because really who has time to go to the movies when you have 3 kids 3 and under. I cant remember the last time I went out to a movie...now Chad and I can have dates at home after the kids go to bed...we get to save money, have a great time and stay in our PJ's :-).  We put on "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" for the twins today to see what they would do...I think they could get used to their new digs pretty fast....just see for yourself :-)

Oh and the movie Courageous was awesome, though I cried through most of it...a wonderful story about fatherhood and family....LOVED IT!!!!

Chad tested in on Saturday w/some PreSeason Football

Healthy Eating...So Many Benefits

So a couple of months ago when Chad and I agreed to take all processed foods out of our diet and the kids diet I had to make sure that I was committed to eating healthier and not trying to loose weight otherwise the point would be missed.  Of course I hoped through eating better I would lose some weight (who wouldn't?) I just knew that could not be our focus or especially my focus.  In fact I refused to step on a scale knowing that if I had, and I had some underlying expectations that were not being met I would probably give up w/o giving our new life style a real chance.  But curiosity got the best of me as my clothes had started to fit a little better I just had to see what the scale said and I am so happy to say I am now 13 lbs lighter than I was when we started just 2 months ago and I am even happier to say that I did not 'diet' one day in the past 2 months.  I ate when I was hungry, I ate what I was hungry for, I indulge sweet cravings (with healthy sweets) and I even made myself a homemade mocha just about everyday using whole milk.  I can't tell you how freeing this is for me.  We have ate some extremely healthy meals and we have also ate pizza (with homemade whole wheat crust) and tostado's, I eat nuts, and avocado, and whole fat cheese and sour cream things that you wouldn't see on a  low fat/cal restricted diet...which means not only am I not hungry I am not feeling deprived.  What we aren't eating, and what has been removed from our diets (and I can say I don't miss any of it) is white flour, white rice, and other refined grains, no white/brown or artificial or other refined sugars.  I don't buy any prepackaged foods/snacks from the store.  So I basically make everything, brownies w/whole wheat flour and honey instead of sugar, whole wheat muffins, pancakes, waffles, corn bread, biscuits basically anything and everything we consume starts from whole, fresh, unrefined ingredients and I make it into a meal :-).  We buy a lot of local/organic produce and meats strictly from grass fed cows and or free range pigs and chickens. Yes, our food bill has gone up a little but not as much as you might think.  We are no longer wasting our money on junk and we eat at home a ton more than we used to so its working well for us.   I think I can speak for both Chad and I when I say we are so happy to have made the changes that we did and they are here to stay!!!!

Twins Bedroom

I have been wanting to post photos of their twins room for a while...it is the only room that is completely done but we are getting close on so many others :-)

BEFORE

AFTER

I made these vinyl wall trucks for Evan w/my Silhouette Machine and he LOVES them.  I also made the crane photo in the frame.

I hate the ventilated shelving that all builders put into closets these days...they are cheap and not very functional especially in pantries (but that is another project for much later :-) ) So one by one we will be replacing the closets.  We started w/the twins for 2 reasons...we already had the shelving unit and because they are 2 kids sharing a not very large closet it was important for it to be organized and functional so we did our own make shift DIY built in closet w/a book case tower, added shelving at the very top and then added 4 clothing rods as well as hooks on the doors for their PJs and bags.  I really love how it turned out and I also really love that we were able to do this for next to nothing cost wise.

This project included:
Painting the walls
Adding crown molding
Adding two different types of shelving
Vinyl Art Work
Organizing closet
Window Treatments

One down and many to go :-)

First School Lunch

I signed the twins up for a couple weeks of their schools' summer program.  They go T&Th this week and T&Th the week after next from 10-1 and because they are there right in the middle of lunch time they have to bring lunch w/them...in which the twins though that was the coolest thing ever.  They really though they were big stuff w/their little lunch bags.  I should have taken a picture of them proudly carrying their lunch bags into the school but alas I do good to get us out the door on time :-) maybe Chad will be able to capture the moment when he takes them to school tomorrow (I am working a few of my ANG days).  But w/that being said I did manage to capture a photo of the actual lunch when I was making it :-) It contains Plain Greek Yogurt w/pureed berries and homemade granola, carrots and hummus, almonds, cashews and a whole wheat pita triangle w/homemade refried beans and shredded cheese.

This & That and Everything In-Between

ANNALIESE
And I think we will start with Annaliese...my STAR!!!!  Still sweet and adorable as ever.  She had her 6 mo. check up early this week and is weighing in at 14.13 pounds and if I remember right 25 1/4 inches.  Doc said based off of her milestones she is hitting that developmentally she is doing things at 8 months so she is 2 months ahead of schedule.  Along those lines I guess I should tell you that she started army crawling this past weekend at just over 6 months old.  CRAZINESS!!!!  I think she just can't wait to keep up w/big brother and big sister.   She is sleeping great, she has slept through the night a few nights in a row and is now only waking once sometime between 4-6 on nights that she does wake up and even then she eats for about 10 min and then goes right back to sleep.  She wakes between 8:30-9:30 and is sleeping about 4-5 hours during the day.  Sometimes she takes one super nap for 4 hours and then take one cat nap and other days she take 3 naps like she should be doing...but I let her do her thing instead of forcing a schedule on her.  I would prefer her to be on a schedule but on days when she wants to take one long nap I feel like I should let her instead of waking her so we'll see if anything normalizes and I can put her on a schedule then :-)

MY TWINNIES

I love my 'double trouble' so much, sometimes when I look at Annliese and I try to remember the twins at that age it is hard to imagine they were that size once and only a shadow of who they are today.  They have grown so much and continue to amaze me every step of the way. They are officially on Summer Break from school but I know they can't wait to start again in the fall.  They will start the 3 y/o program right after Labor Day and will go 3 days a week from 0915-1215 (MWF).  I had so much fun being able to participate w/them, as their school invited the parents to attend the Easter Egg Hunt, a Mother's Day Brunch, and end of school ceremonies.  It was so sweet to see them be part of the program and how much they have learned and grown from their experiences even though it was just a short time.  I had a very proud mommy moment picking the twins up from school right before Mother's Day.  Their teacher took time to stop me and tell how wonderful the twins are and how much she LOVED them and thanked me for bringing them.  She said Evan had captured her heart and that he was such a sweet and responsible kid and that he is going to be such a great big brother.  She went on to say how sweet and affectionate Taryn is as well.  I was so relieved to hear this because to be honest, I wasn't sure how they were doing and I feared they were adding chaos to her once cohesively run class as the twins started months after the others.  I imagine their first week or so made her feel like it was the beginning of the school year all over again and I was just hoping she wasn't resenting us starting so late in the school year.  So I guess it is safe to say that the twins are much better for their teachers and in school than they are at home...which is fine w/me, I am happy to know they save their good behavior for other people :-).

Other going-ons w/the twins include no more diapers/pull ups for Taryn...she is fully day and night trained now.  We were just doing diapers/pull ups at night but I ran out and didn't buy more and she is doing great.  We have, as of yesterday, given up the sippy cups and are now drinking from an open cup, yesterday they did better than today, but overall they are doing great they have no problem drinking from the open cup the problem comes w/them being a bit careless and knocking their cup over.  We are also done w/the bed rails, so they are in full up twin beds now and yes, Evan fell out a couple of times but he is doing great and their beds are low to the ground so no injury risk :-).  They are just growing up so fast and every time I turn around we seem to be in a new phase.

OUR FAMILY

Chad and I continue to work on the house and getting settled, in the midst of this transition, really since last Feb a lot of things have fallen to the wayside including healthy eating and meals.  Sometimes we did OK and other times well I would be to embarrassed to share how uncharacteristically our eating habits got, we'll just leave it at lots and lots of take out.  Now that things are at least starting to get settled for us I figured no time was better to get back on track.  A few months ago I came across this blog http://www.100daysofrealfood.com/  and really its not far off from how we aspire to eat anyhow, maybe just takes it a step or two further.  While I limited the amount of sugar/sweet I gave the kids I would use sugar sparingly in baked goods like muffins and breads, I also did store bought whole wheat breads and other foods that I felt were OK but now understand maybe are more processed than originally thought.  What the information on the blog has challenged me to do is to use zero granulated/brown sugar and instead honey and 100% pure Maple Syrup in my baking and other items as well as buy nothing processed and make most of my own stuff including breads and pastas (not sure I am quite there yet).  I have put some of these principles to the test w/some banana muffins earlier this week and they were great (no sugar just a tablespoon of honey added to the mix).  To help us focus our meal plans w/clean eating I subscribed to www.emeals.com clean eating meal plan, so far so good.  The first meal I made was Asparagus Lemon Soup (pictured below), Whole Wheat Biscuits, and Honey Glazed Apricots, it was actually very good and the kids liked it too.  I was nervous to try the soup, I mean its pureed Asparagus but I will be making this again, it was YUMMY!!!

 My Bowl of Soup
The Twins Plates (soup, apricot and heart shaped whole wheat biscuit)

While we are not foreign to this way of eating we do have some more changes to make to be 100% real food.  I think for Chad and I the biggest change we have to make is no more Splenda or other sugar subs, we will be exploring other ways to sweeten our coffee, tea and I guess give up soda completely which probably is for the best.  Diet Dr. Pepper has been my one vice that I have had no intention of ever giving up but its probably time and I really don't want the kids to have soda and I don't think it would be fair to keep it in the house and tell them it's only for Chad and I, right now they don't care but eventually it may become more of an issue.

Another challenge I have is to readjust the way I view food as I have bought the diet version of foods forever, almost everything in my shopping cart is reduced fat, low fat, no fat, sugar free so on and so forth...I'm a food marketers dream.  I want the lowest overall calorie intake I can get but I am learning to adjust my train of thought and realize that real and natural even if higher in calorie is more important.  Also how my body processes these calories and what I am putting into my body is probably more important then my over calorie intake for the day.  So as we adjust the way we think and feel about food we will make these changes and see how it works out.

We don't view this as a diet as we are not 'on a diet' we have the intention for these to be life time changes for us and our family.  On the other side of that I believe in living life and enjoying life too, so I am not going to make us prisoners of our own rules when we are out and about and want to enjoy a treat, I am all for that, I just think we need to make these changes for us, for this to be our daily normal.  We will celebrate birthdays and holidays w/lot of sugary and fun treats, not like we need another reason to look forward to the Holidays but why not save if for then anyways :-).

Yesterday, I made the twins smoothies w/spinach in them for the first time and they didn't even blink.  I had left over banana from breakfast and apricots from the night before so I threw it all into the blender w/plain greek yogurt, spinach, ice and a little maple syrup.  I poured the left over into ice pop molds for frozen 'gogurt' pops.

There will definitely be some adjustment for the twins as well as they have gotten used to having Gold Fish Crackers, store bought cereal and granola bars and other processed treats that I don't plan on buying any more of, but they are doing fabulous so far as most of the foods I have given them are not foreign to them, they are used to lots of fresh fruit, veggies and yogurt/smoothies.  Today for lunch we had whole wheat pittas bought from Trader Joes w/homemade refried beans, cheese and whole fat sour cream (can't remember the last time I bought that).  Evan scarfed his down and then ate half of Taryn's.  Taryn was all about the fresh berries that were on the side, she wasn't so crazy about her pita but she never has been my sandwich/bread girl so I think we will get there w/her.  My intent was to leave her uneaten pita for her for later but then Evan went and grabbed it and started to eat it so I let him have it, I figured if he was hungry better he have it than battle Taryn :-)

We still have some things to learn and changes to make but we are taking our time and making necessary changes as we go.

THE HOUSE

Status : Work in Progress but getting there

Here are some photos from our latest projects which include wall paper in the master bedroom along w/crown molding and paneling in the foyer.  We still don't have one room 100% done so it will be an exciting day when I can post photos of a completed room but until then these progress pictures are as good as it gets :-)

 Wall Paper
 and Crown Molding
 Foyer before Paneling
Chad adding the first piece the base board
and what the paneling looks like completed...we still have more paneling sections to add, another coat of paint and we need to caulk it
